OVERVIEW

For over a decade Marketing and Communications professionals have been using the Internet to attract and retain customers.   More recently, social networking tools such as LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook have been adopted by HR professionals to promote their brand and to seek out hard-to-find skilled candidates.  In addition, many organizations have developed proprietary on-line employee communities to enable collaboration and teaming throughout their enterprises.

As Internet capabilities have reshaped how business operates, social media usage is now changing expectations of organizational culture and employee engagement.   The next decade will see social media platforms not only grow as vital selection tools, but as a primary means for employees to be more actively engaged with customers, the market and in their jobs.  Based on current research, this empowerment should result in greater satisfaction and lower turnover.

Drawing upon her unique expertise in social media, human resources, and marketing and her leadership experiences at IBM, Andrea Goldberg, Ph.D., will go beyond the hype and provide a clear understanding of the social media landscape and clarify how social media tools can be used in the area of employee selection and retention.    She will review social media platforms and share case studies on how enterprises are using these tools.  She will not only explore advantages, but also articulate risks associated with using these tools and discuss ways organizations can mitigate such risks.

DESCRIPTION

The presentation will include an overall perspective on social media and on-line communities.  Topics covered include:

  • Twitter,  LinkedIn, Facebook and niche HR and recruiting- focused communities
  • On-line employment branding
  • Case studies on social media use for employee selection and engagement
  • Best practices on HR social media implementation including:
    • Social media guidelines
    • Metrics and analytics
    • Leadership and change management

Attendees will learn how to better target potential employees, attract candidates and unlock the creativity and insights of their employees.  They will also learn to avoid the pitfalls that some organizations have experienced because they implemented programs without well-thought-out strategies.
