There are no reasons to be stressed out, right? Wrong! We’re in a mental health crisis! We have plenty of reasons to be stressed out right now. Turn on the news, read your phone alerts, and scroll through your social media feeds and you will see how Americans are besieged by stress. We are being bombarded with mental health triggers. Some of the things we are facing as a society in addition to a three-year, constant health threat with fluctuating Covid-19 variant numbers, concern about nuclear war, economic uncertainty, a spike in prices at the gas pumps, and grocery stores making a 40-year high, the increase on retaliation and sexual harassment claims, the move to a digital workforce, the great resignation, natural disasters plus the alarming numbers of shootings all over the country.

It is no wonder mental health has reached a crisis stage in the United States. Recent statistics show that depression is climbing since the onset of the pandemic:

  • Affecting one in every three American adults.
  • Four in five managers are supporting at least one employee with a mental health issue.
  • More than 50% of employees are experiencing burnout.

Stats from LifeWorks Mental Health Index, 2021

As employers move toward establishing a new workplace equilibrium, we are being asked to deliver certainty during uncertain times. Healthy and productive people are the heart of high-performing organizations. Protecting and promoting mental health at work is about strengthening capacities to recognize and act on mental health conditions at work, particularly for the person responsible for the supervision of others, such as managers.

Everyone has the right to work and all workers have the right to a safe and healthy working environment. Work can be a protective factor for mental health, but it can also contribute to worsening mental health.

This 2-Day Mental Health and Corporate Wellness in the Workplace Certificate Program will equip you to protect and promote physical and mental health at work and support people with mental health conditions to participate fully and equitably at work.
