Overview

The Regulatory Compliance for Drinking Water & Wastewater course covers US Federal, State, regional and local standards for regulatory compliance associated with drinking water and wastewater systems. The course will include overviews of regulations and standards, including not only those directly related to drinking water and wastewater quality, but also related areas such as treatment, chemical storage, land use, risk mitigation and infrastructure construction.

Operations, engineering, water quality and compliance and management staff who work for, oversee, or provide consulting services to utilities should attend this course. Attendees are assumed to be generally familiar with drinking water and wastewater terms. Attendees will learn about the federal regulatory determination process, environmental regulations governing utilities, compliance challenges and assistance resources, and regulatory changes and trends expected over the next several years.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, attendees will:

  • Review the federal Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act and their amendments, and how they are amended, administered and enforced
  • Discuss how States might enact regulations more stringent than the federal regulations
  • Gain a general understanding of other environmental regulations that may be applicable to drinking water and wastewater facilities;
  • Discuss new and pending regulations and how the regulatory climate has evolved in recent years
  • Have access to a number of compliance assistance resources and strategies to achieve and maintain compliance
  • Have the ability to guide others in their organization on these topics
  • Identify ways to prevent noncompliance events and the associated fines and negative publicity
